Dr Herbert Wharton

Dr Herbert Wharton was born in1936 in Cunnamulla, Queensland and began his working life as a drover while in his teens.  He has a staggeringly significant biography, having been awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal 2003 for service to Australian society and literature, the Australia Council Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature in 2012, an Honorary Doctorate for Literature from University of Southern Queensland in 2013, and in 2014, he was honoured as a ‘Queensland Great’ recipient.

One of Australia’s most travelled Aboriginal writers, Herb is regarded as an Ambassador for Aboriginal literature and recording Aboriginal stories, as well as a strong advocate for promoting the education and understanding of Aboriginal Culture world wide.
